Wat Sri Chum in Sukhothai: Where History and Tranquility Meet

Wat Sorasak

Wat Sorasak is a small temple located in the center of the old city wall. It was built in 1412 by Nai Intha Sorasak and is characterized by a characteristic chedi (stupa) surrounded by elephants, a typical style of the Sukhothai period. The bell-shaped chedi, resting on a low square brick base, is supported by 24 elephant statues that symbolically support the temple’s structure. Made of bricks and covered with stucco, the chedi represents the historical importance of elephants in Southeast Asia, which served in wars, timber harvesting, and as symbols of power and Buddhist protection. The temple’s chedi was restored in the 1980s by the Thai Fine Arts Department. In addition to the chedi, Wat Sorasak contains the remains of altars, a viharn (assembly hall) and a pedestal where the main Buddha image once stood.
