What we’ll do

About the Khantoke Dinner Show

The Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center was the first to create the famous Khantoke Dinner Show, which beautifully showcases the unique Lanna culture of Northern Thailand. Created in 1970, this dinner show helps to preserve traditional customs of song and dance by combining more than a dozen performances with a delicious local sit-down Thai meal.

At Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center, you’ll be greeted by a hostess, guided to your seat, and offered to order fruit juice, tea, or an alcoholic beverage. The dining area consists of floor cushions and low-level round “khantoke” tables as well as traditional table and chairs from which to choose.

After you’ve sat down, dinner will be served. It includes a colorful selection of slow-cooked curries, stir-fried vegetables, fried foods, and sweets, which can be refilled as much as you like. You are encouraged to eat your food with your fingers, using small balls of sticky rice to dip and pick up your food.

As you dine, watch the evening’s dazzling array of dances. These include energetic solo dances such as the Swords Dance as well as the graceful group dance of the Fingernails Dance. Each Thai classical performance is specially choreographed. Many were created in the last 150 years based on stories and techniques dating back several centuries. The Old Chiang Mai Cultural Center is passionate about persevering these original customs and traditions. At the end of the night, you’ll have the opportunity to join the dancers on stage for one last song and dance.
