Happiness is cooking with your grandma.” That’s the motto of the Grandma’s Home Cooking School in Chiang Mai, which is located on an organic farm just 20 minutes outside the city in a charming village in Saraphi. In our small class setting, learn how to cook traditional Thai food in a beautiful outdoor setting beneath Thai-style Lanna pavilions. Choose from a half day morning class (3 dishes), half day afternoon class (4 dishes), or full day class (5 dishes) plus a special menu item. Then, sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you’ve proudly made yourself!

If you’re interested in the half day cooking class

Half day morning class from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

  • Meet in your hotel lobby
    • 8:30AM to 8:45 AM : the area of the old city center and Night Bazaar
    • 8:45 AM to 9 AM : within 3 km outside the old city
  • 9:15 AM : Visit the local market and learn about special ingredients and seasonings of Thai food
  • 10 AM : Arrive at Grandma’s Home Cooking School and receive welcome drinks and snacks
  • 10:20 AM : Begin the class by learning how to cook steamed rice and sticky rice
  • 10:35 AM : Take a tour of the organic farm, collecting fresh eggs, herbs, and vegetables for the dishes
  • 11 AM : Make your very own Thai soup and stir-fry dish and then eat it
  • 12 PM : Learn how to pound curry paste and use it to make a creamy curry dish
  • 12:30 PM : The chef will show you how to make dessert and special refreshments step by step
  • 1 PM : Depart from the cooking school
  • 1:30 PM : Return to your accommodation

Half day evening class from 3:30 PM to 8 PM. Note: This course does not offer a visit to a local produce market

What we’ll do

About the Cooking Class At Grandma’s Home Cooking School

Learn how to cook delicious traditional Thai food at Grandma’s Home Cooking School, just how Grandma used to make it! This class will teach you which special ingredients are used in Thai food, several traditional cooking techniques, and the history of Thai food and its health benefits. You can look forward to a fun and educational experience, even if you’ve never cooked before!

Begin your day with an eye-opening visit to the local market in the Thai countryside. Our English-speaking instructor will teach you about the special herbs, spices, and other exotic ingredients that go into traditional Thai recipes. You’ll also see a large variety of fresh tropical fruit and vegetables being sold by the local vendors.

Once you arrive at Grandma’s Home Cooking School, receive a welcome drink and snack and then explore the organic farm, learning about which Thai herbs and vegetables are grown there. You’ll also meet the resident ducks and chickens, feed them, and collect chicken eggs. It’s a true farm life experience!

Next, it’s time to put on your apron, choose a cooking station, and get messy! Everyone will learn how to make steamed rice and sticky rice in addition to making one of Thailand’s national iced (non-alcoholic) drinks.

Choose three items for the half-day morning course or four items for the half day afternoon course from the following list: soup, stir-fry, curry, or dessert. If you sign up for the full day course, you’ll also make an appetizer and an extra menu item for a total of six courses.

Grandma’s Home Cooking School is not like other cooking classes in Chiang Mai. The menu changes depending on what day of the week you visit and whether you take a half day or full day class.

The morning half day course includes three dishes from the above list plus one special menu item. The evening half day course includes four dishes from the above list plus one special menu item.

The full day cooking course includes five dishes from the lists above plus one special menu item. Everyone will make Papaya Salad (Som Tam).

The best part about cooking is eating what you’ve made! Throughout the class, there will be several opportunities to taste test your culinary creations. Once you’ve eaten your fill and relaxed under the Lanna pavilions, you’ll receive a recipe book at the end of the course. Afterward, enjoy your cooking class memories on the ride back to your hotel in Chiang Mai.

  • Children must be at least 12 years old to participate in the cooking class and must be accompanied by an adult.
  • If you would like to visit the cooking class with your friend or family member but do not want to cook, the fee is ฿600 per person.
  • If you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please inform us at the time of booking. We can accommodate gluten-free and vegetarian diets upon request.
