Catfishes in Chiang Mai!

Giant Catfish

Fishing in Northern Thailand is an absolutely amazing experience that all anglers should be able to experience at least once in their lives. Indeed, some endemic species like the Mekong giant catfish or the snakehead fish reach here elephantine dimensions! Even carps and perches are exceptionally large and you will definitely take pleasure to measure yourself against them. By the way, do you really know the big fish that you can encounter in Thailand?

The Mekong Giant Catfish

Belonging to the family of freshwater pangasius, the Mekong giant catfish (pangasianodon gigas) is an endemic species from half-lower Mekong. Accustomed to the currents of the Mekong, these fish are particularly powerful and hold the world record of the largest catfish. In 2005, in northern Thailand, fishermen were indeed able to capture a giant catfish of nearly 300kg and 3m wingspan! If they are the largest fish in Southeast Asia, they are also the rarest but we have the chance to be close to one of the finest tanks here in Chiang Mai.

The Snakehead Fish

Another very impressive fish, the snakehead fish, or Giant snakehead, is a large predator that kills many more fish than he can eat. This large freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia is particularly present in rice fields and rivers and is one of the most consumed fish in the local cuisine. The snakehead fish is caught in surface lure, especially with imitation frogs and lizards.
